Korean Cancel Culture

The Hallyu Wave has been recognized in the Philippines ever since. Multiple Korean Drama (aka KDrama) series gained popularity in the country over the past few years. Not only that, K-Pop has also dominated the hearts of music lovers all over the world. However, we cannot deny the issues and hate behind all these glorifications.

As a KPop and KDrama fan, I have observed that in Korea, it is a big deal to live up to people’s expectations and standards when you are a public figure. Koreans are very particular when it comes to their traditions, history, conduct, social norms and ethics, etc. That is why when a celebrity or a tv production makes it in the news headlines because of some issues, you definitely could not find peace for a couple of days - the netizens will come at you. With the rise of social media, rumors spread with a single tap. Netizens react and take sides almost immediately even without knowing the truth behind the issue. Things could go out of hand and lead the issue to a downward spiral that would satisfy the harshest critics in the country.

Celebrities create a certain image that raises their value through the public’s eye. They are expected to abide by the rules, traditions, social norms and ethics. They are met with bigger criticisms and feedback when their image is tainted even with the slightest dot. Through these standards created by society, humanity is forgotten. People tend to forget that before these celebrities rose to fame, they were (and still are) normal human beings.
