Maby's Top 8 K-Drama Faves

Updated: Nov 22, 2021

In a time where we can’t escape to the mountains and seas, we resort to staying at home curled up in bed surfing through Netflix. The shuffle button might not give you what you want, so, here are Mon Cheri Daybook’s K-Drama picks!

Looking for a breath of fresh air? Gear up for some aegyo-filled romcom scenes with Dongman (Park Seojoon) and Aera (Kim Jiwon)! Fight For My Way revolves around two childhood best friends who confront their feelings while in pursuit of fulfilling their dreams. Aside from the kilig, your heart will be touched by the series’ life lessons.

In a world that is cruel and heavy, My Mister teaches us the power of kindness and humanity. This slice of life drama tells the story of a 20 year old Jian (Lee Jieun) and her middle-aged co-worker Donghoon (Lee Sunkyun) who develop a sense of kinship as they withstand the weights of life. New relationships and strong bonds are formed over a meal and a glass of beer while healing their past scars.

Wonder what happens in the after-life? Check in at Hotel Del Luna for some experience! Shortly after her My Mister stint, Lee Jieun comes back as the cold and greedy hotel owner, Jang Manwol. Centuries later, she meets the cursed man’s child Gu Chansung (Yoo Jingoo) and invites him to run the hotel with her. With spirits from different walks of life coming to the hotel, the hotel crew develops a family-like bond until the end of their time.

Hospital Playlist follows the story of five doctors who have been friends since 1999. Once in a while, we see them take a break from their complicated lives through their band practice. This drama series brings us heartwarming episodes from people’s day to day lives.

If you are looking for a legit cry fest with a hint of fantasy, Hi Bye, Mama! is the best pick for you! The story revolves around a mother (Kim Taehee) who died in a car accident and later on gets a chance to live again and express her undying love for 49 days. It also shows the husband’s (Lee Kyuhyung) grief and struggles on his wife’s death.

A psychiatric nurse (Kim Soohyun) crosses paths with a children’s book author (Seo Yeji) diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder. Together with the nurse's brother, the trio starts a bond that slowly brings them to their healing journey. The drama highlights the importance of mental health - a known taboo in South Korea.

After losing her job, big city dentist Yoon Hyejin (Shin Mina) opens up a clinic in a seaside village where she meets the community’s ace, Hong Dusik (Kim Seonho). Hyejin adjusts from her glamorous life to the village’s close-knit and heartwarming bonding.

Reply 1988 is the last installment for the famous Reply series. It follows the 1988 nostalgia of stories within and across the 5 families in the neighborhood of Ssangmun-dong, north of Seoul. The series mainly highlights the special friendship between the 5 teens who grew up together in the neighborhood, showing their special bond through and through. If you are looking for wholesome, heartwarming scenes with a chunk of romcom, Reply 1988 might be the right one for you!
